Foster Youth Initiative (FYI)
There are three primary objectives of the FYI project: The first objective is to prepare foster youth for adulthood. AmeriCorps members as Youth Mentors, work directly with foster youth and provide life skills activities, tutoring and financial literacy lessons. Youth Mentors develop caring and supportive relationships with foster youth and help them to make positive life decisions. The second objective is to support volunteer recruitment. AmeriCorps members as Volunteer Coordinators, build organizational capacity by recruiting volunteers to serve in both ongoing and one-time community project opportunities. Data collection includes tracking volunteer numbers and hours. The third objective is to increase the professional growth and development of individual AmeriCorps members in such a way that they: (a) develop life-long personal/professional skills and (b) increase the capacity of communities, and the field. By generating a stronger workforce in primary prevention, education and social services, we find that the experience of service in our programs is both valuable for personal growth and creates greater interest to continue working in a similar field, long-term, in their careers. It is not uncommon for members to be hired as staff after their term of service as AmeriCorps members. |
