First 5 Service Corps
|
Information for New PartnersFirst 5 Service Corps is an AmeriCorps State project, grant-funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and CaliforniaVolunteers. AmeriCorps was created to increase national service within American communities with a mission that states: get things done, strengthen communities, encourage responsibility, and expand opportunity for both the members and the service beneficiaries.
There are two primary objectives of the First 5 Service Corps program: The first objective is to increase child skills to ensure that children remain developmentally on track and are ready for school. AmeriCorps members serve in home visitation programs, family resource centers, preschools, and other community-based organizations that work with young children and their families. AmeriCorps members primary activities relate to supporting the growth and development of children in individual sessions (such as home visits), in groups (such as small playgroups), or in community events (such as health fairs). The second objective is to increase the personal growth and development of individual AmeriCorps members in such a way that members (a) develop life-long personal/professional skills and (b) increase the capacity of communities, and the field, by generating a stronger workforce in primary prevention, education and social services. We find that the experience of service in our programs is both invaluable for individual member growth and generates greater interest from members post service to continue working on behalf of children and families in their long term careers. In fact, it is not uncommon for members to be hired as staff after their term of service as a member ends with the organization they served. |
