Foster Youth Initiative
The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento, Inc. (CAPC) implemented the Foster Youth Initiative previously Youth Investment Center program in 2004 with support from a variety of community partners. 50 AmeriCorps members are currently serving in 10 communities where the county’s removal of children and foster care population is the highest.
The FYI program endeavors to provide foster youth with the skills, experience, and attachments to adult role models to thrive. The program approach and activities that are based on the research-based Casey Family Program’s “ Its My Life—a framework for Youth Transitioning from Foster Care to Successful Adulthood ” and the Ansell Casey Life Skills Assessment Guidelines. The services provide youth with knowledge needed to become successful in life’s important areas, such as:

- Work and study skills
- Home life
- Self-care
- Social relationships
- Housing
- Money management
- Career planning
- Work life
Join AmeriCorps with the Foster Youth Initiative !The Foster Youth Initiative is a statewide AmeriCorps program dedicated to providing services to foster youth. AmeriCorps members serve in school districts, nonprofit organizations, community action agencies, and County Children Protective Services Agencies. Foster Youth Initiative AmeriCorps members provide foster youth with the skills, experience, and attachments to adult role models to thrive.
Foster Youth Initiative Positions:Youth Mentors
Work one-on-one with youth and facilitate life skills training, financial literacy lessons, emancipation support groups, and academic assistance. Volunteer Coordinators Support the volunteer program through recruitment and outreach, and organize volunteer-facilitated workshops. |
Member ProfileZoe is a second term member with the Youth Investment Center program. As a former foster youth herself, she mentors foster youth on independent living skills necessary in order to thrive as an adult.
Zoe was personally recognized by Mayor Darrell Steinberg for her service to her community. She plans to complete four terms with AmeriCorps. "I have a responsibility to my community, to help make it better for the next generation." |
